COME JOIN THE HRCLS FAMILY!
Due to the current situation with COVID-19 we are not currently taking applications from new volunteers. We welcome you to contact us in September 2020 and we will advise whether we are taking new applications at that time.
Hume Riverina Community Legal Service highly values its trusted team of volunteers. Their contribution allows us to extend our services, and we always welcome more volunteers to join this team to help people who need free legal assistance.
Evening advice is every Tuesday in Wodonga and every second Tuesday in Wangaratta, from 5.30-7pm.
Each volunteer gives advice to a maximum of 3 clients each clinic, will be provided guidelines on advice to give and instructions on appropriate referrals, and all clinics are supervised by a Senior Lawyer, who is available for consultation when needed.
We also generously hold free training sessions on various areas of law throughout the year, to which volunteers are invited to attend. This helps upskill and can contribute towards Continuing Professional Development requirements.
Why volunteer?
This is a meaningful opportunity to give back to your community. Embrace a new challenge and help those vulnerable and disadvantaged people who would otherwise not have access to fair justice. It’s also a chance to:
- learn new skills
- gain experience
- meet interesting people
- hear interesting stories
- good for your health and wellbeing
Eugene Butkowski is a long-standing volunteer and has enjoyed the mutual benefits and impact from helping in his role:
“I joined HRCLS as a volunteer lawyer in 2001 to support the Tuesday evening volunteer clinic. The experience has expanded my skills and horizons through providing legal advice to HRCLS clients, of which many are considered the vulnerable in our society. This honour and privilege has allowed me to participate in the HRCLS vision to provide a free legal safety net to the Albury Wodonga community and surrounds. I would encourage any lawyer to assist in this satisfying and worthy experience.”
